Finally, meet Coffee Porter, the first beer at Café Ernani, made in collaboration with Birrificio Rurale and Fabio from Beerslinger89.
A declination of the English Porter, infused with an Arabica Specialty coffee blend, specifically created from the union of Indian Kalledevarapura and Brazilian Women’s Coffee, IWCA Italy certified.
The project
For this Christmas we wanted to make something really special, different from all our classic products, and that would surprise our customers.
The idea actually danced in our heads as early as October 1, 2023, the day on which, on International coffee day, we organized a Coffee Beer Tasting session at Ernani.
I have long wanted to collaborate with Fabio, aka beerslinger89, a great lover and connoisseur of both coffee and beer. So he himself created this tasting format, to present a somewhat unusual union of two worlds.

I for one was not convinced about the taste of these drinks, but I trusted Fabio and tasted them on the day of the event.
What a surprise!
I discovered brand new flavors that I never thought would go so well together!
From that same moment I looked at Fabio and said, “I want Ernani Coffee Beer, too!”
He immediately took action by putting me in touch with several craft breweries in our area, but the choice could only be one and only one: Rural Brewery.
First of all because he is from our own town, Desio.
Second, because a relationship of mutual trust and respect was immediately established, sharing much of the values and goals that we at Ernani also have.
They are great connoisseurs of the raw material, they work with an overwhelming passion, they have a sense of family and mutual help, and let’s face it-they are nerds, just like us at Ernani!
They work seriously, but they don’t forget to have fun!
They look like this:
“A craft brewery is made, first of all, of people who share a project and a method.” Born in 2009, Birrificio Rurale is now an established reality that has found in the quality of the beers it offers a common thread to follow. All this with the aim of creating a craft production in which the relationship between those who produce and those who love these beers is privileged, a true living product.

Finally, this new beer is part of the Rurale Collaborative Series project, a container created to enhance and share passion, quality and experience with those who, like them at Rurale, live fully for what they do.
The beer
This beer is a declination of the English Porter style in which the strong synergy between the nut, caramel, and cocoa notes of the roasted malts used and those of vanilla, red fruits, citrus, and tobacco offered by the blend of selected Specialty coffees will leave you speechless!
English Porters are the typical English dark beers that originated in London in the 18th century and were drunk by dock workers, hence the name. Current Porter beers were rediscovered in the 1970s, thanks largely to craft breweries that reproduced them.
They are, yes, dark beers, but with a moderate alcohol content and a more delicate and fragrant flavor profile than the more full-bodied and heavy Stouts.
Dark brown in color, it also enjoys good clarity and offers a firm, velvety cream on the surface.
Coffees
We at Ernani wanted to enhance the aromatic notes and structure of the beer. After several tastings, also made in the company of Rurale, we arrived at two potential coffees:
- India Kalledevaraoura
- Brazil Women’s Coffee
Both two single-origin Arabica Specialty coffees.

Arriving at a balanced blend that blended perfectly with the base Porter beer.
In fact, the Indian reinforces the notes already present in the beer, such as those of toast, nuts, caramel, and vanilla, while the Brazilian gives more character to the cocoa notes. Both, however, also give a few extra scents, respectively red fruits and citrus the Brazilian, and a hint of tobacco the Indian.
Brazil Women’s Coffee
So called because it is grown from a pink plantation, in which women’s labor is valued, eliminating gender inequalities. All this is then certified by the IWCA, International Women’s Alliance in Coffee, more specifically by the Italian chapter, of which we at Caffè Ernani are members.

Everywhere, more and more women are becoming an essential part of the process, occupying positions of power and revolutionizing the coffee world. To date, they cover 70 percent of the labor force on the plantation and 25 percent of farm ownership. The IWCA is committed precisely to ensuring equal employment opportunities and protecting women throughout the supply chain.
This coffee, too, is harvested with great care through picking (hand-picking) and processed using the washed method, which gives greater freshness and aromaticity during extraction.
The nose is intensely aromatic with hints of almond and cocoa.
The palate has sweet notes of almond and red fruits, balanced by a fresh and pleasant tartaric acidity, reminiscent of pink grapefruit, along with the soft bitterness of hints of bitter cocoa and nuts.
India Kalledevarapura
The experienced growers, now in their fifth generation, carefully tend the plant at every stage of the process and manually pick the drupes, containing the kernels, using the picking method, and then recheck and reselect all the harvested cherries. After that they are processed by the semi-washed method, which gives a pleasant and fresh acidity in the cup.
All around the plantation also grow mostly oak, jackfruit, spice and fruit trees. It is thanks to these that the raw beans develop an aromatic range, which ranges from ever-changing, new and intense scents.
The nose is intensely aromatic with hints of almond and cocoa.
On the palate, on the other hand, first sweet notes of almond are heard, then come hints of tea leaves and red fruits along with a soft and pleasant acidity. From here we move on to notes of milk chocolate and tobacco leaves, concluding with vanilla.
