If you think coffee is just a drink that wakes us up in the morning, you’re sorely mistaken! Behind every piping hot cup lie incredible stories, mysterious legends, and a bit of gossip that would make even celebrities blush.
From the pastures of Ethiopia to the plantations of Brazil, coffee has a history full of surprises, and we at Caffè Ernani couldn’t help but tell you about them, while also tasting our single-origin coffees from around the world.
Ethiopia and the Discovery of Coffee: A Hyperactive Goat
The most famous legend has it that coffee was discovered in Ethiopia, thanks to a shepherd named Kaldi… and his goats! It’s said that one day his goats started jumping for joy after eating some red berries: they seemed hyperactive, happy, and incredibly energetic. Kaldi tasted the berries and… boom, the rest is history.
If you want to savor the origin of everything, our single-origin Ethiopia Sidamo will transport you to those green and mysterious hills, with floral and citrus notes that will make you feel like Kaldi… or like a curious goat.
Yemen: Where Coffee Met Love
From Ethiopia, coffee arrived in Yemen, and here the legend takes a romantic turn.
It is said that Yemeni merchants, enamored with its aroma, began growing it in the gardens of their palaces, amidst forbidden gossip and flirtation. Some historians even speak of “palace gossip”: young courtesans and coffee scholars exchanged secrets about the best infusions, while the scent of roasted beans lingered in the air.
India: Baba Budan, the grain-stealing monk
And then there’s Baba Budan, the 16th-century Indian monk who made history… in his own way.
He stole seven precious coffee beans from Yemen and ingested them, hiding them… let’s say, in a very specific place in his body, before bringing them to India. From those seven beans, thousands of plants grew, sparking a true green revolution.
Our India Kalledevarapura will make you savor that boldness, with spicy notes and a full body, as if every sip told the story of a monk’s courage and the fate of an entire nation of coffee plants.

Brazil and the secrets of the new frontier
We arrive in Brazil, where coffee conquered the New World and… the nobility!
The protagonist is Francisco de Melo Palheta, a charming Brazilian colonel sent on a diplomatic mission to French Guiana in the 18th century.
The official objective? To obtain coffee beans, which at the time were strictly controlled by the French.
But the story took a turn worthy of a novel: Palheta won the heart of the French governor’s wife, who, before his departure, gave him a bouquet of flowers… with a coffee plant hidden inside!
Back in Brazil, Palheta planted those secret seeds, giving rise to the first crops in the country, today one of the largest coffee producers in the world.
Our Brasile Bom Chocolate or our Caffè delle Donne will make you savor those first plantations, with sweetness and a rounded body, perfect for those who love a story that smells of sun, samba and a pinch of mystery.
Europe: The Dutch and Botanical Theft
In the 17th century, coffee also conquered Europe… thanks to a small, great theft. The Dutch stole a coffee plant from Mokha, Yemen’s main port, thus establishing the first cultivation outside Arabia. Between commercial intrigues and botanical secrets, coffee began to circulate in city living rooms, becoming a symbol of modernity and curiosity.
Gabriel De Clieu and the love story… between a sailor and a coffee plant
A century after the Dutch coup, it was the French’s turn to write a new chapter in history.
The knight Gabriel De Clieu, a French naval officer, literally risked his life for his greatest love: a coffee plant.
During a voyage to the Caribbean, the ship was struck by storms, famine, and even a pirate attack, but De Clieu did not give up: he shared his water ration with the plant to keep it alive.
That small heroic gesture gave rise to the first coffee plantations in the French Antilles, and from there the bean conquered the Americas.
Our Honduras Las Capucas retains that adventurous spirit: lively, sweet, and full of tropical nuances. One sip will make you imagine stormy seas, Caribbean sun, and the courage of those who risked everything… for the love of coffee.
