There is a surprise coming up in Ernani Coffee Roasting!
On the occasion of International Coffee Day and MilanoCaffè 2020, a very special new single-origin will enter among the products of the Corso Buenos Aires roastery.
Specifically on Saturday, October 3, from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., this incredible Indian coffee with its own characteristics that make it unique will be served over the counter and sold in bulk for home consumption.
It is called Kalledevarapura Estate Pulped Sun-dried, nicknamed Kalle by us.
Let’s start at the beginning: Kalle, named after the Kalledevarapura plantation of the same name, is grown in India in the Bababudan Giri region, the birthplace of Indian coffee, located between 1,000 and 1,450 meters above sea level.
It is called the place of origin of coffee in India because legend has it that a pilgrim named Baba Budan in 1670, passing through Yemen, from whose port the export of raw coffee was forbidden, managed to take away some precious coffee beans, ingest them, and plant them in this region, where the first coffee harvest took place and where a hill, Baba Budan Giri Hill, named after him, still exists today.
It is here that a group of fifth-generation pickers has specialized in growing Arabica-quality beans.
In fact, this top-quality coffee stands out from most on the market because of the meticulous routine of caring for the coffee plants and berries.
They are harvested strictly by hand, selecting only the ripest cherries one by one and processed with great care, following the semi-washed method.
And not only that!
In addition to all this, special respect is given to both the environment and the workers.
In fact, only organic fertilizers are used, to protect the earth’s natural ecosystem, moreover of their own making, in fact having the coffee cherry waste composted. They also drain the water used in planting so that it can be reused in subsequent processing of the raw grain.
But the thing that struck me most was the wonderful respect for the plantation workers.
Many people do not know that workers in coffee-producing countries are generally very poor and live in unhealthy conditions with severe economic disadvantages.
That is why within the plantation they decided to create entire neighborhoods where they could live for free in houses also served by running water and electricity.
They are also provided with essential medicines, free schooling for their children, financial bonuses and maternity leave.
All this makes Kalledevarapura an environmentally friendly, eco-friendly coffee to be appreciated not only for the taste, but also for the wonderful history that brings it to us.
Going into more technical details and characteristics instead, Kalle is a coffee with an elegant and balanced character, with moderate acidity, in which sweet notes of white chocolate and vanilla prevail over bitterness.
It is a perfect coffee to consume even late in the day due to its low caffeine content.
These characteristics are then enhanced by the typical Ernani roasting, a medium roast, thanks to which all the aromas are best expressed, making it less bitter than classic Italian espressos.
That is why I recommend that you try it without sugar, to be able to best perceive all these intriguing characteristics.
We at Ernani value sustainability and the protection of all workers, which is why we focus only on cafes that guarantee these aspects.
I look forward to seeing you at the roastery on Saturday, October 3, to serve you a Kalle!
